The Challenge
In order to meet a critical deadline in Europe, Darby and Darby had only four days to translate a major biotechnology patent into five languages: Dutch, Greek, Italian, Spanish, and Swedish. To complicate matters, the 20,000 words of highly technical terminology would need to be translated over the Easter holiday weekend. Furthermore, in order to be considered valid in the European patent offices, the translations would have to be completed according to strict legal guidelines.

The TLS Solution

To guarantee that the correct industry terminology would be used, each translator chosen for the project was a native-speaking linguist of the target language and an expert in the field of biotechnology patents. Due to the time constraints and the large size of the project, each source document had to be divided up in such a way that multiple linguists could work on different sections of the translation simultaneously.
